The site selected for the project in Mexico is the Obregon irrigated area located in the Yaqui Valley, which covers an acreage of 4500 km². The closest major city is Ciudad Obregon.
The climate of the site is semi-arid with few winter rains.
The main crops that can be found in this area are wheat, maize, potato and cardamom. All crop production is under irrigation, leading to winter being the main cropping season and few crops being grown during summer as water is scarce.
The site manager for the Mexican site is the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT).
