Site description
The site selected for the project in Morocco is actually divided in two parts:
- The Tadla plain corresponding to the Oum Er-Rabia watershed, which covers an area of 12 500 km². The closest major cities are Beni Mellal, Beni Mellal and Khenifra.
The climate there is arid to semi-arid, with a dry season from April to October and a wet season from November to March.
The annual rainfall is 300 mm and the average temperature is 18° C, with a maximum of 40 ° C in August and a minimum of 3.5° C in January.
- The Tensift watershed, which represents 3500 km². The closest major cities are in this case El Jadida, Casablanca, Safi and Sidi Benour.
The climate there is semi-arid, with a dry season from May to October and a wet season from November to April.
The annual rainfall is 350 mm where the average temperature and the temperature range are the same as above.
The main crops grown in both parts are wheat and sugar beet during winter and alfalfa in summer. The Oum Er-Rabia watershed also includes orange and olive groves, whereas corn fields can be found in the Tensift watershed.
The growing season ranges from September to August in the first case and from December to June in the second one. In both watersheds, crops are mainly irrigated, with field size ranging from 0.5 to 10 ha.
