The partnership of the Sentinel-2 for Agriculture project supported by ESA is led by the Université Catholique de Louvain (BE) and involves the Centre d’Etudes Spatiales de la Biosphère (FR) and the companies CS – Systèmes d’Information (FR), CS Romania (ROU) and GISAT (CZ).
The UCL-Geomatics research group is part of the Earth and Life Institute (ELI) of the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL).
Defined by end-user needs thanks to close collaborations with international agencies and private companies, the research strategy is centred on developing automated methods for land cover change detection at various scales and methods to use optical and SAR remote sensing for monitoring cover dynamics in a relevant manner for the agriculture and forestry sectors
The team expertise includes canopy biophysical variable retrieval using radiative transfer modelling, comprehensive field experiments and advanced image processing techniques, including object-based approaches and multivariate statistical methods applied to space-time analysis. Through several international challenging projects (GLC2000, ESA-GLOBCOVER and CCI Land Cover, Geoland-2, WWW, L3JRC, etc.), this team has acquired a unique expertise in mass processing of very large volumes of data enabling it to handle all Earth observation scales, from the very high resolution imagery to the global daily time series.
The research activities also develop geographical information system applications supporting multidisciplinary modelling and participatory dynamics for natural resources management in both tropical and temperate regions.
CESBIO is a joint laboratory of 4 public organizations: Toulouse III University, CNES, CNRS, and IRD. There are 60 permanent and roughly 60 non permanent staff located in two permanent sites (Toulouse and Auch) and temporary sites in Morocco, Tunisia and Lebanon. About 75% of the staff is in Toulouse
CESBIO staff has multidisciplinary expertises: physics, signal and image processing, agronomy, ecology, hydrology, plant physiology, software programming, database management, GIS and Web GIS, etc.
CESBIO has a long record of activities in the development of pre-processing and processing algorithms and softwares in the optics, thermal infrared and microwave spectral domains. As an example, it specified, prototyped and validated the operational pre-processing chains for SPOT-VEGETATION. Since 2004, it is also involved in the pre-processing (cloud masking, atmospheric effects corrections, time compositing…) of dense time series of high resolution EO data in the frame of the preparation of the Venµs mission, for which it developed algorithms and chains tested and validated with several hundreds of Formosat-2 and LANDSAT data. It then extended this work to the pre-processing of Landsat, SPOT and more recently RapidEye.
CESBIO is also involved in the cloud masking and atmospheric correction schemes used in the Venµs ground segment, in the Sentinel-2 simplified Level2 product processor and in the French Theia Land Data Center.
Through numerous major projects, CS has acquired a long experience as prime contractor, able to lead international consortia.
Some major recent references can be mentioned and specifically: Pleiades ground segment (Control centre, Programming chain, Image quality, Secured Dual Ground Segment) and the ATV CC M&C for CNES; KHEPER project for DGA; GIMUS project for ESOC; S2 PDGS IPF project for TAS-F/ESRIN. Such projects cover the whole lifecycle of any development project, ranging from specification, design and development to warranty and maintenance while involving several major sub-contractors.
Being also strongly involved in early phases of programs, CS gains a noticeable knowledge and skill in systems user needs and operational concepts of space systems. For instance, CS participates to the system architecture of the phase A of the CSO ground segment (HELIOS follow-on).

CS ROMANIA is strongly involved in software development projects such as: flight display systems, digital engine control, cartography, flight warning systems, flight data processing and flight dynamics.
GISAT, established in 1990, is the first privately run remote sensing and geoinformation service company in the Czech Republic. Its office is located in Prague. The company mission is to provide its clients with wide range of value added, complete, high quality, affordable and ‘state-of-the-art’ geoinformation services based on the Earth Observation technology.
GISAT brings to its domestic and international clients complete portfolio of services starting from satellite data and geomatics software distribution, through specialized image and GIS data processing and analysis, up to advanced geoinformation products.
